Rainbow obsidian is a special volcanic glass that is black but at the same time partially transparent and has settled in thin layers. Each of the solid layers reflects sunlight in a different color shade, throwing rainbow reflections. In the case of velvet obsidian, there was also an earthquake during solidification, so the layers mixed and this unique velvet effect was created.

Obsidians have long been considered mystical stones, black obsidian have been and still are used to make ritual knives. One of the reasons for their popularity among shamans is their volcanic origin.
